Founders Tribute Hallway Dedicated at Homeland Center

Generations of families use the hallways of their homes to display their most cherished photos of their beloved family members and milestone moments. The pictures tell the story of a family’s foundation, values, hopes and dreams. Homeland recently unveiled its most cherished family photos at a special dedication ceremony held at Homeland Center. The Founders Tribute Hallway recognizes the inspiring work of the 18 women from nine churches who founded Homeland nearly 160 years ago.

Homeland began as the Home for Friendless in 1867 following the devastation of the Civil War. Widows and orphans needed food, shelter and medical services. The founding 18 women formed the organization and served as its original board of managers. That tradition continues as 18 women serve in this capacity today.

“We transformed a space in Homeland Center to tell our inspiring story,” says Judy Bowman, a member of Homeland’s Board of Managers. “Residents, volunteers, staff and visitors can see the images every day and know they are part of our lasting legacy.”

Judy helped lead the committee that created the Founders Tribute Hallway. While plans began to take shape a year ago, the seeds for the project began in 2024 when Homeland featured its founding churches in its 8th Annual Lottery Calendar. Historic Harrisburg Association Executive Director David Morrison and Board President Jeb Stuart provided imagery and historic highlights of the churches as well as the founding leaders. Homeland recently featured the 18 founding members in its 10th Annual Lottery Calendar.

While David worked closely on the project, the dedication ceremony was the first time he saw the finished product.

“This is beautifully done,” David says. “A remarkable story has been brought to life through the imagery.”

Following a community gathering, Homeland held a brief presentation in its chapel to give voice to those who founded Homeland. Current members representing the original churches, volunteers and supporters were invited to participate. Their attendance served to remind us of the powerful ties of faith and dedication necessary to lift up our community. From 1867 to 2026, visionary women with a will of compassion for others has helped make Homeland a place of hope, love and compassion.

“It is an honor and privilege to continue this work,” Judy says. “I am inspired by the founders and happy to do my part.”
