In the aftermath of the Civil War, widows and children throughout Harrisburg faced profound loss and hardship with few places to turn. A determined group of local women answered with compassion, courage and action. Their efforts led to the founding of the Home for the Friendless in 1867 — and began a legacy of care that continues through Homeland today.
Commissioned in celebration of Homeland’s 160th anniversary, Iron Ladies brings the organization’s founding women to life through history, theatre and storytelling.
Written by local playwright Cindy Rock Dlugolecki, directed by Heather Poppke, and presented in partnership with Gamut Theatre, this original production explores the personalities, challenges and shared determination behind an important chapter of Harrisburg and Dauphin County history.
